Subject: [*] ClarisWorks Demo
ClarisWorks represents the next generation in integrated software with
seamlessly integrated environments that offer powerful word processing,
graphics, spreadsheet, charting, database and communications functions.
Unlike existing integrated products, which force users to constantly
switch Rmodules,S ClarisWorks lets you access different tools from within
a single document. With ClarisWorks you can start with a single document
and add text, graphics, calculations and charts at any time.
ClarisWorks is the perfect fit for the Macintosh Classic, LC and
PowerBook since the application is just 565K. Its XTND technology lets
you read and write to dozens of popular file formats. Finally, since
ClarisWorks shares the same interface as the rest of our software family,
you can easily learn a dedicated Claris application if your needs grow.
This ClarisWorks demonstration version is a full working version of
ClarisWorks except for the following restrictions:
% Files will not save.
% Printed documents have a RClarisWorks DemoS watermark in the
foreground.
In order to fit on a single disk, this Demonstration Version does not
include the ClarisWorks spell checker, thesaurus, online help, or the full
set of XTND translators or communications tools.

Re: grapher-331.hqx
This file is a re-submitted binhex to replace the file grapher-33.hqx,
which I understand was garbled and/or not unstuffable. The originally sent
information for Grapher is repeated below.
Please put this file in the "app" archives of info-mac. Thank you!
Grapher 3.31 Information
Grapher is a function graphing program, intended as a low-cost (but
powerful) tool for students and researchers. Functions are entered in the
standard BASIC notation (e.g. 2*x; cos(x^3); 3*x-sqrt(x)) with the usual order
of operations assumed. Several functions may be graphed on the same set of
axes.
The program is shareware ($8 per individual, $25-$35 site license).
Registered users will receive updates upon request.
The program supports the standard menus for saving and loading files,
printing, and copying graphs as PICT graphics to the clipboard. Other
features include zooming in on parts of the graph, zooming out, and
locating solutions and intercepts.
The author is Tom Rona, 13210 42nd Ave NE, Seattle, WA. 98125, USA.
The program is written in Think C (Symantec Inc.) using the Think
Class Library.
Entry: Type a function, or several functions, separated by semicolons,
e.g. 2*x; cos(x^3); 3*x-sqrt(x), and click "Draw". The functions will
all be graphed.
Symbols: You may use any of these: / * + - ) ( <any digits>
<spaces> <decimal point>
Functions: You may use any of the functions from the "Use" pop-up menu.
This menu will insert the chosen function at the cursor. You may also type
the function yourself.
Zooming: To zoom in on an area of the graph, select a rectangle with the
mouse. The new domain and range will be shown. Then click on the "Draw"
button. To zoom out, click the "Zoom Out" button. The new domain and range
will be shown. Then click on the "Draw" button. You may also type in
the domain and range directly.
Copying: To copy the graph to the clipboard, select an area of the graph
with the mouse, or use "Select All" from the "Edit" menu. Then use "Copy"
>From the same menu.
Coordinates: To show the coordinates of any point, click on that point.
The coordinates will be displayed in the domain and range boxes.

Dear Netters,
Many people have asked on the net about converting, Word, Pagemaker,
Wordperfect, and IBM-MAC compatibilities. I recentally asked MacLink/PC what
are its new translation formats for version 7.0. Remember all codes, fonts,
styles, and graphics are preserved when you translate from program to
program.
Also, all you need is a Din Serial port on your Mac to connect with an RS 232
9 or 25 pin IBM serial port (i.e. no SuperDrive is necessary to run
MacLink/PC if you use the cables and terminal emulation). Dayna's DosMounter
3.01 is also included.
I recentally got the letter in response from MacLink/PC saying they have
expanded their compatibilities. Below is a list only of the most recent
software compatibility additions (August 1992). They also are compatible
with earlier versions of the same software.
Disclaimer: The information here is directly quoted from material sent to me
by DataViz. It may contain inaccurate statements. All the software below are
registered trademarks of their respective companies. This is a for your
information only message. I sincerely apologize if this message offends
anyone's need to keep only Mac terms on the net. However, this software
exhibits something which the other guys didn't want us to know about.
Compatibility exists between most still (not animated) formats of software in
the MAC-PC-MAC world. The Sun formats are still compatible (using System 7),
and all the previous translations available have stayed the same. At least
according to the list they gave me. I have not tested this beyond WordPerfect
PC- WriteNow and WordPerfect Mac-WriteNow. Also I have linked my Mac with a
Radio Shack PC compatible word processor using the cables, to convert the
files to WriteNow. Quattro 4.0 converts easily to WKS and therefore easily to
DBF through the Mac and Superdrive - this was also successfully done by me.

Thankfully, the LaserWriter IIf problem that was listed in the wrong zone has
been resolved. Thanks to valuable help and advice from Jeff Clowser at Univ.
of Maryland, Earl Misanchuk at Univ. of Saskatchewan, and Alagu Peryannan at
Apple.
The solution? Radar 3.0 showed an incorrect printer zone on my mac only; no
one else on the network was affected. Radar 3.0 allowed me to manually
change the zone from "*" which should be our default zone but was listed as a
zone in Atlanta to a made-up zone name. I saved the made-up zone name, and
then quit and relaunched to change zone name manualy back to "*". Viola! It
works. I can now print to the LaserWriter directly, rather than only through
a spooler.
Thanks again!

Since most of the people trying to use the Apple 32-bit System Enabler
was probably using MODE32 before, I suspect that MODE32 left some

Users experimenting problems with the Enabler should try to reinstall

Hello Netters,
A question from Mark Elliot led me to fiddleling around with system memory,
etc. The situation is that quitting the finder ( option-command-esc ) eats
up 369k of RAM. Try this : startup with the shift key down ( no extensions),
and then issue the 'about this macintosh' command ( uder the apple menu ).
Memorize the amount of free RAM and type <option>-<command>-<escape>. Reissue
the 'about this macintosh command and wonder : 'Hmm where did that part of
memory go ?'
The strange thing is that starting up a application, THEN quitting the finder
and after that quitting the application frees the lost memory....
Looks like something from the twilight zone !

There were some questions a while back about public Internet access services.
One of the things I picked up at MacWorld was a flyer from VersaTerm author
Lonnie Abelbeck who was showing off his new VersaLink software which does
mail and news. The flyer is from Global Enterprise Services, Inc. who
provide a service called JvNCnet (don't ask me what it stands for). This
is essentially a SLIP service, available in a variety of configurations.
They have 4 levels of service, Dialin' Terminal (telnet only), Tiger Mail+
(email and news only), Dialin' Tiger II (full Internet access, including
email, news, ftp & telnet) and Dialin' Tiger (full Internet access, including
email, news, ftp, telnet and an account on their Unix machine). They use
Telebit 3000 v.32bis modems on an 800 number for access.
You can contact them at (800) 35-TIGER or market@jvnc.net
Have fun. Now I can throw the flyer away. ;)

Subject: ARA CCL Modification steps
I recently had to modify a CCL script for ARA, and never having seen this
described in info-mac before, thought I'd submit it here for your review.
1. Use some utility to change the type and creator of the CCL to "TEXT" and
"ttxt"
respectively (case counts). ResEdit will do nicely.
2. Now you have a double clickable Teach Text file that you can open and
examine the actual script. Modem heads will feel right at home here and you
can
kind of follow the "language" used. I needed to change the setup string
sent to
the modem on startup, so I was concerned with the stuff at @LABEL1.
3. After you have modified and saved the script, use your utility to change
the
type back to "mlts" and the creator back to "slnk" and you are done.
Note: I've only tried this with the script for my Powerport Gold, which can
deal
with the Bronze and Silver as well. Check the whole script out to make sure
that
the section you're modifying will actually be used with your modem.

Subject: ARA High Speed Hookup
I know there are a lot of ARA users out there, but I never hear of anyone
having
problems maintaining a high speed (14.4K, v3bis) modem connection. I am
having this problem on all of the lines that I have tried here at the Lab.
I can
connect just fine from my Powerbook(Powerport Gold modem), but when I start
a file transfer to or from a server, it hangs after a few minutes, there's
a click as
the modem hangs up, and then the Mac finally freezes up.
Global village recommended modifying the CCL script so that the max
connection speed would be 9600 bps. After doing this, everything worked
peachy
keen. Kind of a downer actually. Bad enough ARA doesn't use the modem's
internal hardware compression capability, but now I can't even use the max
link
speed.
Has anyone had a problem like this? I thought that v.32 modems could drop
to a
lower speed if line noise was a factor.
As a side note, I seems from the limited futzing around that I've done with
ARA,
it seems terribly inefficient. My home setup is a LanRover/L hooked to a
PSI
Comstation III, which is a non fax, v.32bis, v.42bis modem. When I'd
initiate a
file transfer, the "RD" and "SD" lights did a little too much flickering
back and
forth for my taste. You would think that with the major bottleneck of the
modem
link speed, ARA would try to shove as much data as quickly as possible over
that
link and the SD or RD light would be on the majority of the time until the
transfer was finished. I haven't had a chance to do any more testing, but
it seems
that an efficient transfer protocol like zmodem sending a Macbinaried file
to a
remote host would do a lot better, if that's all you needed to do.
Thanks for all your help

Subject: Best size for partitions (A)
I recently got Hard Disk Toolkit and they mention a'magic number' to an old
hacker like me in regard to the subject question. The number was
32767 kbytes + or - 1. When a partition has more than about 32.767 megs, then
little files fatten from 0.5 kbytes to 1.5kbytes. So, if you have a lot of
little macro files and this is the dominant factor in your choice, choose such
a < 32 meg partition size.
There are other reasons to partition than this overhead. I was beginning to
get leary about my original hard disk driver and the instructions for the new
one gave me a bit of a story about hard partitions.
Just wanted to tell about this one factor because on a Data General Nova at
Lockheed someone criticized me for having any macros at all because each
occupied this minimum space. I then was given my own tape or drive to macro to
my hearts content. Later, I got mysterious crashes from a compiler bug at
handling jump tables with jumps bigger than that magic number, something that
I didn't see directly programming in a high order language, but the compiler
maker new intimately.
That magic number has a treasured place in my book of little known facts on
what obscure things can go wrong and keep you from getting a Ph.D. in
theoretical Physics.
From the above, you know I am not a tradeoff specification man and I hope
you get a more complete answer on this question. Mac Connection sold me
hard disk toolkit or rather gave it to me on a new removable.
They insisted that the 25/50 scsi cable was bundled and now it looks like
I can't address all my hard drives at the same time. That magic number
is causing me a general itch: Do I switch to 32 bits or realize a nanosecond
timing problem (<1ft per nanosec transmission speed) requires 18 inch
scsi daisy chain not 6 ft. economy size. But, where will I get the 32 bit
upgrade to my powerful text editors for LaTeX and syntax based source
generation? These guys originally gave these editors to me for free.
Mac connection wants $18 for cables I don't even know will work.
Does the old hacker have to concede he must buy something?

Hi folks;
I purchased a quadra 700 last year through a university discount program, and
now I heared that apple just released the quadra 800. Although there is no
significant speed gain over the quadra 700 but, it may worth upgrading to if
possible. Apple customer assistance center says that the quadra 700 can be
upgraded to the q800 but the review in the Mac-User of this month says that
it can not be upgraded. Is there anybody knows if the upgrade is possible and
in what $ range. Thanx

Nice to hear confirmation for this from someone who probably has to
deal with it on a weekly, if not daily, basis. I'm certainly biased
now that my wife does tech support (and I've done consulting in the
past), but I think many of Apple's recent policies are increasing
the burden on tech support people significantly. It's getting hard
just to remember all the Mac models and what the salient features
of each are!

As usual, there's no clear channel to Apple for complaints like this.
However, I think general awareness (the article in TidBITS, discussions
here and other places) will allow it to gradually seep into the general
Apple consciousness (at least at the decision-making level - I know
of people at Apple who agree strongly with this as well).

I can only STRONGLY recommend this!! I do a lot of support work with our 50+

Subject: HELP!! Crashed Hard Drive!! (please)
THE CONFIGURATION:
Mac SE/30; 5M RAM; 105Mb internal Quantum drive (2 partitions: 10Mbyte BOOT
partition, 95 MByte 'data and applications'); Asante Ethernet card,
System 7.0.1 w/ TuneUp 1.1.1, Ethernet drivers, MacTCP 1.1, using VIRTUAL
memory (25Mbyte)
INITS/CDEVS:
Mode32, AutoDoubler, DiskDoubler, LaserSpool, Backdrop (works w/ System 7!),
IconWrap, WDEF, Disinfectant 2.8, Remember?, Extensions Manager, BeHierarchic,
Adobe Type Manager, SuperClock, SCSI Probe, DarkSide of the Mac 3.0,
Icon Manager
WHAT HAPPENED:
I was logged on to a Novell network running a Macintosh NLM. Locally, I had
several applications open, including MS-Word 4.0, More 3.1, BYU Telnet, and
Compact Pro. I had just finished toggling between a Telnet session and a
document in MS-Word (cutting and pasting bibliography references) and had sent
the file to the ImageWriter printer attached to my SE/30. Suddenly, I get
a dialog box that says "CBAFACULTY server has unexpectedly shut down" and the
rest of the screen is dark as if DarkSide had simultaneously kicked in. The
SE/30 is 'frozen', so I press the programmer's restart button on the side of
the machine. The machine FAILS to reboot. I get the floppy disk icon in the
middle of the screen, with a flashing question mark "?".
I insert a bootable floppy into the drive with System 6.0.5 installed on it.
The SE/30 boots, but fails to recognize the internal hard drive. I get a
dialogue box that says "This disk is unreadable" with the options
"Cancel" or "Initialize". Obviously, I Cancel.
I boot again, this time no diaglog box appears, but neither does either
hard disk icon for either partition. I insert Norton Utilities and run
the Utilities package. I select "Disk Doctor" to diagnose and repair disks.
I allow the disk doctor to repair all things found in error on both disks.
According to the report, this included boot sector, b-tree headers, and
others.
I then reboot the machine with the floppy diskette containing 6.0.5. Both
disk
icons for each partition appear. GREAT! I now remove the floppy diskette and
attempt to boot from the hard disk. NO GOOD. The Mac displays the startup
screen (TNG Enterprise, B&W) and then hard disk activity STOPS... the screen
is 'frozen' with the picture of TNG Enterprise.
I reboot... the same thing happens. Next, I insert the 6.0.5 bootable floppy
and reboot... this time the two disk partition icons do NOT appear on the
desktop. I leave my office frustrated and fearful that I may never recover
the data on my hard disk.
Please, no flames..... I do NOT have a full backup of the hard disk.
160Mbytes
(actual capacity w/ AutoDoubler working) takes a loooong time to do the old
floppy shuffle, and I have been negligent at keeping the backup current.
Please, if you have any suggestions as to utilities to try or procedures to
run,
I would be interested in hearing about them.
Thanks in advance,

I come from Quebec and have seen French versions of the system running.
If you install a French version it would come with a French Finder and
the std DAs (or however their doing it under sys7). The systems I saw
were actually French-Canadian, not French from europe so they had both
the english and French keyboard layouts installed, and in anycase it's
possible using resEdit to preserve the English layout from you current
system. Keyboard layouts are a resource, I believe they belong to the
keyboard cdev. When you bring up the Keyboard control panel, if you have
more than one layout available it includes a list to choose the layout
from. (though its damned confusing not having the approriately marked
keyboard... you might want to consider buying a French-canadian keyboard
which differs only in the marking on the keys)
WordPerfect, unless you buy a French version, if that exists, would be
entirely in English. this means that menus and dialog boxes would be in
english. the keyboard is under the control of the system and shouldn't
be a problem in French layout. It is possible that the programmers for
WordPerfect were boneheads and hardwired the command shortcuts assuming
an american keyboard, but not likely.
Some international versions of programs exist. I have seen a French
MSWord, inclluding the dictionary. I am sure a fair number of French
version software exists.

The answer, as often, was quite simple but I didn't provide *all* the
essential information by inadvertance! The file I was updating had been
compressed by DiskDoubler. BBEdit's updating process works fine on a DD

the DiskDoubler utility program and then, hey presto -- custom icons!

Try Melissa Heller at Mainstay phone 1(818)991-6540.
Mainstay has the man that originally made binhex code.
They now make stuff that costs money.
If you can print a high res scanner document, MarkUp 2.0 (as of date of
last
ad I got from them) will allow you to e mail and mark up scans too.
Your scanner software must merely be able to print, then MarkUp can take
over.
I suspect a chooser driver than prints to disk. It doesn't integrate with
the scanner, but uses the mac integrated environment.
If what you want doesn't exist, I think these guys can make it. Although
the old binhex today seems buggy in comparison to those who copied it, it has
stuck around because it was free. Don't blame the commercial company for
having
been the first. Give them a shot.

DG will handle 3D plots (and very nicely). All plots are fantastic
when printed and so are used extensively by science based peolple
(Me!).
Problems:
you can only have one data file open at once. This is a pain.
The way you do graphs is a bit wierd. I don't like it actually.
(I realise that last point didn't help. Let me say that it isn't
exactly intuitive to make a plot.)
Each graph you make stays with that data file until you
traverse a dialog box to delete it. Also a pain!
As you can see, I'm not a fan but it seem s to be the only 3D plotting
(postscript) around.
KG - Excellent postscript printing output.
Little more intuitive and powerful for data maniplation
and series creation.
Plotting is a little easier.
Can easyily handle multiple plots/plots.
Can open many data files at once.
Direct editing of fields (like Cricket graph and unlike excell)
Problems: Default save for a data file is a KG binary file, thus
other packages wont open it. (you must tell it to save as text)
occassional bugs. Not too serious though.
Other than that I really like. Plus it's more configurible than
Cricket graph 3
I hope this helps

A few days ago I posted a question about why I couldn't get Macintalk to

compatible version (1.33), ftp'ed from wuarchive, and the Mac had only once
managed to utter anything (and I couldn't reproduce what I'd done to make
it work).
Anyway, Tom Bender, the author of the very fine public domain text editor
TexEdit (which can read your files aloud using Macintalk) suggested turning
32-bit addressing off, and that did the trick!
However, all of this prompts me to ask what the present status of Macintalk
is. I know it's no longer supported, and is largely incompatible with the
current Sound Manager. But what is the actual latest version of Macintalk,
and can it be freely distributed, or does it have to be bought from APDA?
Does Apple have any plans to bring it up to date ultimately, or else to
produce a completely new utility which does the same thing? Macintalk was
ahead of its time and still manages to delight people who hear it for the
first time - it would be a shame if Apple bowed out of this little game now

Subject: re-Atm -PostscriptVS Truetype.
A desktop publisher I know says that Truetype Fonts don't look as good as
the Postscript ones, and John Dvorjak (sp?) aggrees- we all know he is
always right, or at least insightful. Oh well to my eyes the Truetype
fonts are fine, and using them cuts out the hassle of one more extention
that is quite a memory hog- at least rastering the True Type fonts sometimes
gives memory back, and it does not have to be pre-set. If your entire world
of printing will probably not include Postscript printers go ahead use the
true type- there are lots of fine TrueType Fonts. The most important rule
seems to be don't have both at once- Times in both TT and ATM. the Font sizes
are supposed to be slightly different, and it really increses the computer
overhead, and if you can convince the computer to use TT for the screen and
use Postscript in the printer bad spacing things are supposed to happen.
Therefore Postscript users should trash TT fonts. I think it is prob best
to use one or the other, in my environment - Classic/ and Stylewriter the
logical choice is TT- possibly it is for you too. By the way- keep an eye
out for TT fonts provided by apple- they are exceedingly nice, and if you get
them from the proper places I am pretty sure that they are perfectly legal
to collect- I think that I have about 25 good fonts (actually 20 more than I
need) and most of them are courtesy of checking out the disks that come with
Apple printers.- all released before they started charging for System
software,
therefore all free for me as a Mac User.

Subject: SAM 3.5
SAM vs. Disinfectant: Depends on what kind of features you want and how much
support you receive (and who supports your machine). One clear advantage
of a commercial product such as SAM is that the company (in this case
Symantec)
will notify you when new viruses are discovered. If you use Disinfectant, the
only way to learn about new viruses is if you are heavely into computer news
(such as reading the Digest on the net). If you are an end user that has no
idea what is happening in the Mac world and no one (or yourself) supports
your computer, then I strongly suggest a commercial package. However, since
you posted a message to the Digest, I assume you read it. Therefore, you know
when new viruses appear and can get a new cooy of Disinfectant. Basically,
it comes down to the simple fact that is you don't know about the new viruses
you can't protect yourself against them.
As far as features go, I personally like SAM better (more bells and whistles
;-)
SAM 3.5 is what is currently running on my Mac at home. I like it cause
it can scan inserted floppies. This is very useful is all kinds of people
use your machine; they won't always know to scan new floppies with
Disinfectant.
I guess that if you know enough to be able to get the new Disinfectant and
know when the new viruses appear, it is just a matter of does SAM's additional
features overcome SAM's additional price. That is something you will have to
decide yourself. I have made my choice: SAM. But I still keep my copies
of Disinfectant upto date.
[All standard disclaimers apply; i.e. I don't work for Symantec just a happy
user, etc.]

Subject: SAM 3.5 (A)
Hi Pat,
The only advantage I see in purchasing SAM 3.5 as compare to Gatekeeper and
Disinfectant is that SAM allows for scaning of compressed files. This
means you can scan a Self Extracting Archive package before double cliking
on it. A Virus infected app may be disgused as a SEA package, so when you
double click on it, it will immediately infect your machine.
Other than the above advantage both of the other applications are very good
at keeping up with the latest virus protection schemes.
Then again SAM has a fairly large company behind it.
I hope this helps!

Word 5.x Not 32-bit Clean
------------------------
Chuck Levine wrote an apt response to our comment in TidBITS#157
that Word 5.x-related items flagged by Compatibility Checker 2.0
are compatible with System 7:
"I have found that a few of the Save As translators are NOT 32-bit
clean (namely Text with Layout) Using these translators in 32-bit
mode will crash systems. I first found this problem with Word
5.0a. Microsoft admitted that the problem wasn't fixed in 5.1 and
wouldn't tell me when they planned on fixing it."
Chuck's right about the problem with the Text with Layout
converter, and you should also watch out for these 32-bit problems
with Word:
* Using the WordPerfect converter in conjunction with AccessPC
from Insignia Solutions.
* Using Alki Software's MasterWord version 1.0 (update to 1.0b for
32-bit cleanliness).
* Using Word 4.0 and earlier (Word 4.0a is fine). If you need
32-bit cleanliness and use Word 4.0, Microsoft will update you to
4.0d for free.

Subject: Size of Desktop file on Diskettes
When I initialize a new diskette, an invisible file, Desktop, is created.
Fine. What I don't understand is why it's a different size on each diskette.
I THINK I've got freshly intialized disks with Desktop files ranging from
about
9K to 145K. I say THINK, because I'm trying to use ResEdit to do a
"Get File/Folder Info..." command, but it doesn't work on these files. Even
if
the diskette is locked, I get an error saying that the file is already open by
another application. The 9K to 145K comes from the "xxK in Disk" line under
the title bar for the diskette (with 0 items).
How do I keep these Desktop files small until I really start to put files on
the diskettes? My guess is that it has something to do with how long I leave
the diskette in the drive after initializing while I go on and do other stuff,
possibly affecting the Finder desktop. Anyone got a definitive answer?
Is there any way for ResEdit to look at a diskette Desktop file? I CAN get
info on the hard disk's Desktop DB and Desktop DF files. What would really be
cool would be a pointer to a document that discusses the Macintosh standard
invisible files (at a high level, as oppposed to Inside Macintosh stuff).

Do you have NOW Menus installed? NOW Menus has an application substitution
feature that may be the cause of your problem. If it is installed goto the
NOW Menus control panel and check the Substitution list of Creator Types.

Subject: Student discounts on Apple Hardware
Student discounts are available from dealers in the UK upon proof of
academic status. These discounts apply to most authorised Apple resellers,
but then I am not aware of a campus based distribution system in the UK
If Apple US sees fit to only offer educational discounts through such
campus stores then it looks like you're screwed, unless you can convince
someone else's campus store that you are a genuine student/academic.
I wonder what a genuine student/academic looks like...

Subject: StyleWriter "blinking" problem (Q)
My StyleWriter (original model) has started acting strangely of late.
Sometimes when I turn it on all three lights on the top blink and the
printer won't do anything at all. It just keeps blinking. It doesn't
even go through its usual warm-up calisthenics. I wait for a day or
two (!) and it behaves correctly again. Any ideas?
Also, more recently it has started sending erroneous "I'm not ready"
and "I'm out of paper" messages to the Print Monitor.
Any suggestions appreciated. e-mail preferred. Thanks!

Subject: Xinet K-Ashare, NFS/Share, Pathway Client NFS, Unix-to-Mac (Q)
Joel Snyder late last year published an interesting comparison of two NFS
Macintosh clients, NFS/Share (InterCon Systems) and Pathway Client NFS
(Wollongong Group), and remarked that NFS was a Unix standard, but was
not an ideal method of safely exchanging files between Macs and Unix.
Another product, K-Ashare (Xinet), publishes the Unix disk to the Mac
Chooser, allowing it to be mounted on the Mac desktop. Files on the
Unix disk can be opened by either Mac or compatible Unix applications.
Xinet say that K-Ashare is more than twice as fast.
Does anybody have experience with K-Ashare, or any further comments
on mounting Unix disks via ethernet on the Mac desktop ? I know about
CAP and Unix MacDump, but the first does not do ethertalk phase-2, and
the second does not work with Quadras.

I had similar problems where the desktop was rebuilt and still I
could not launch applications by clicking on the documents. As I
recall there was at least one type of application that could be
launched while others could not. I didn't look into it as much
as you did but ran into a "cure" by accident.
I simply booted the computer with a floppy (I have a MacTools
Emergency Disk). I used the MacTools' DiskFix to look for
problems but it found none. Then I restarted the computer and
let the hard drive boot. Then it began to do an automatic
desktop rebuild which took longer than usual. After that
everything was A-Okay.
My setup was: IIci, Sys 7.0.1, TuneUp 1.1.1
Give it a try if you haven't already. Let us know how it turns
out.
